Teaching Business Ethics: Student Exercise: Reading Aristotle

A basic rationale for Virtue Ethics may include the following:

1. The insufficiency of Kantian and Utilitarian theories. The inflexibility of Kant’s dictum, “never lie,” and the ambiguity of the utilitarian core concepts of interest, welfare, or happiness are usually cited as reasons for this insufficiency.

2. Kantian and Utilitarian theories are based on what may be called “extreme other-regard.” That is, an over-emphasis on self-sacrifice and the welfare of others, perhaps to the detriment of the flourishing and welfare of one’s self.

3. Kantian and Utilitarian theories do not provide motivations: “Principle-based ethics leaves us with an unbridgeable motivational gap between the applied principle and the action” (DesJardins 97). We need a context in which motivation toward personal moral goals can be justified.?

Suggested Exercise:?

1. Give students a quick sketch of Aristotle’s Golden Mean idea and then have students read Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics sections relating to the virtues suggested by Bragues as being most directly related to business:?courage, self-control (temperance), liberality,?magnificence, magnanimity (pride, in the Ross translation), sociability (Aristotle’s unnamed virtue, similar to friendliness), and?justice. (Justice might well be omitted, since it rather complicated in Aristotle’s text and involves political and economic concerns.)

??

2. Ask students to provide a defense of how one virtue applies to contemporary business. Ask for examples of situations in which this virtue is called for and of persons who exemplify this virtue. Encourage students to be creative in their interpretations, while trying to stay true to the basic ideas behind Aristotle’s examples and descriptions.

3. Consolidate the findings of the class through discussion. Create a picture of an Aristotelian Business model for our times.?

4. Compare the student-generated model to the way that Bragues interpreted Aristotle’s text. I think Bragues’s ideas may benefit his broader reading of the text, but it’s a virtual certainty that students will provide many creative and useful interpretations of the virtues. This should be a fun, idea-generating exercise for students.

Fancy Auto Answers ? Cars Demystified | Ask Car Questions, Get …

One reason that people fail when trying a home based enterprise is because the have the wrong mental attitudes. Many people are inspired when they first start, but quickly lose enthusiasm when they don?t immediately get impressive results. Some of the things that will be covered in this article is how you might learn from successful entrepreneurs, and the methods they used to build their businesses. Many articles, books and programs on the topic of self-improvement talk about the importance of having a positive attitude. Avoiding negativity quite often means staying away from people who have bad attitudes, even family members. This can be other people who drain you or make you feel like you can?t achieve your goals. Negative thinking that can drag you down can also be found on TV. Life is about knowledge, and knowing the right thing to do. It is not always possible to have the right attitudes, but you can make a choice to find people who will uplift your mentality, rather than drag you down.. No matter what type of business you start, whether online, or off-line, there will be times when things go so badly that you will want to give up If you start a business you want to be prosperous, so you must develop the attitude of persevering until you find a way to make the money you want. Go to the facts on menozac free trial for logical details.

Many people starting out with a home business are too focused on getting immediate results and therefore find it hard to stick to doing productive tasks. For example, if you?re involved in selling and have to make a certain number of calls, or write a certain number of emails every day, you should do this without getting too preoccupied with the results. You need to stick to it, even if it is quite discouraging that you don?t make sales right after you first put in some effort. Since there are few businesses that can offer immediate gratification, you should only rethink your strategy if months have gone by with no results because you can?t expect every step you take to produce results right away.

Establishing relationships with potential clients, networking and making contacts are all very important. You don?t want to irritate people, which is why you have to be responsible when networking. We?ve all met or heard of people who are involved in multilevel or network marketing who have alienated their friends and family by trying to get them to buy the vitamins or cosmetics line that they sell. You should discuss your business only with people who are open to the idea and under the right conditions, but you always need to be ready, whether your are presenting on the phone, face to face or online.

While you may have to make some effort at developing a home business mindset at first, after a while it will come naturally to you. When they start working for themselves, many people still have issues with letting go of past ideas from when they worked for other people. The principal traits of a solo entrepreneur are motivation, the drive to achieve goals and persistence.

LG shows off its UI 3.0 for Ice Cream Sandwich devices, says it's 'unobtrusive and simple'

Love them or hate them, those ubiquitous Android skins aren’t going anywhere any time soon. Now the latest one to make an entrance to the overlay game is LG’s UI 3.0, which the Korean outfits says will make the overall experience of its handsets easier, speedier and “more convenient.” The new UI brings features such as a novel drag anywhere-style lock screen, an Icon Customizer for setting your own photos as icons / shortcuts, a revamped Pattern Lock that lets you preset apps for quicker launch and a Voice Shutter trait for taking snaps via voice commands — à la Sammy S Voice. UI 3.0 is set to make its debut next week with the launch of LG’s Optimus LTE II in Korea, while the Optimus 4X HD will also come sporting the fresh skin once it launches in June.

The Lucious Delight of Anticipation | Musings by Candlelight ? Tina …

?Well,? said Pooh, ?what I like best,? and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn?t know what it was called.??????? A.A. Milne

Anticipation by Rob Hefferan

?The sun lately in Seattle has been breathtaking, warm and luscious on skin that has been three layers deep in some black fabric.??The Beloved?and I have pulled out the bikes and taken most weekends to ride to some brewery around the Northwest.? Other than getting my seat accustomed to the initial torture of ?? you know ? it has been glorious.? I?m not sure what this weekend holds ? but I am looking forward to another dry and warm weekend on the bike and some cold microbrew at the end. I must confess however ? one of the favorite things about biking is?the ability to listen to books I don?t have time to read, but really want to!! So far I have ?read? The Hunger Games, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, The Poisenwood Bible ? and now ? 50 Shades of Grey.? Yep ? you guessed it! Which brings me to the focus of this?blog ? the eroticism in expanding anticipation.? E.L. James exquisitely describes how each of the main characters grows anticipation and desire in the other. I am convinced it is part of what makes this book so hot and why it has affectionately been called ?mommy porn?.

?In a culture like ours which suggests waiting for anything is ?unfortunate? at best and ?unnecessary? at worst, we slowly get lulled into the notion that it is the possessing of something that is the link to our happiness.? But rather, I believe it is the longing in desire that brings that luscious alive feeling.??When we feel?anticipation, our senses are heightened, our mind is quickened, and our attention is pulled into the moment.? We are fully alive when we are in the midst of anticipating something pleasurable. In ancient Hebrew sacred texts, it was desire that was seen as the heart of all creativity and passion and the example of the breath of God within us.? In marriage we can easily get numbed by tasks and acquisitions and miss the heat and juice that comes when we intentionally grow anticipation and desire.? Think about the last time you knew something you really wanted was upcoming ? maybe a trip, maybe the visit of an old friend, maybe a gathering of friends, maybe some surprise you had planned for your lover.? Can you remember the amount of delight in the anticipation, the eagerness, the creative juices that were flowing as you thought of ways to make it even more memorable? Anticipation is one of the potent ingredients at the early stage of a relationship and it is anticipation that infuses and expands the erotic tension that we love to hate.

?How could you expand anticipation in your relationship?? If you plan a nice dinner out ? maybe you could put some planning into how you can increase the anticipation involved. Here is something The Beloved recently did.? A week before my birthday?he told me to be ready to be picked up at 5 ? he had a night planned that involved many different locals ? and that is all he would say.? I knew nothing ? except what the appropriate attire would be.? (He at least answered that question.) He was coy, not answering my inquiries, dropping hints but then acting nonchalant. In many ways it was the time and effort he put into growing the anticipation that heightened my senses to experience more fully the night when it finally came. Anticipation and desire flavor and spice the object of your desire, and heighten the experience of it when it finally comes.? Without?pleasureable anticipation our lives and our love can become rout, routine, predictable, boring.

If you are in need of some spicy fun in your relationship here are a few ideas on?how to build anticipation :

  1. ?Design a scavenger hunt for your lover ? around the house or?from local to local, something that your lover would experience as playful and delightful.? For example tape notes on chocolate hearts that have him going around the house to get the final message which could be a chocolate heart that has been inside your bra all soft and ready to be eaten.
  2. Get tickets to an upcoming?concert or show?(or whatever would float her boat) and tell her to set the date aside.? Slowly over 2 weeks give her hints ? but drag it out and tease her with it.
  3. Get up one morning and tell her to stay in bed (do this at night if you have small interrupting?little-ones in your house).? Put together a yummy breakfast.? When you bring it to her, throw a twist in things and tell her that you are going to bind her hands with a long silk scarf and feed?the breakfast to her. Ask her what bite she wants first ? then give her something else.? Tease her with it. Be playful. See if you can get you both laughing with delight.? Feel free to eat some of her breakfast in front of her ? or off of?her toes?? or?

As Winnie the Pooh suggests, savor the moments BEFORE the honey.?

Please Tell Your Friends ? ONLY 3 spots left in the October Couple?s Intimacy Retreat.? 72 hours of delicious pleasure?while learning the art of love!!?

Fotolia scores $300m in equity, debt financing from PE firm KKR in exchange for 50% stake

First stock imagery site Shutterstock files for a $115 million IPO, and now rival Fotolia is selling 50 percent (note: link goes to a paywalled Financial Times article) of the company to private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR).

KKR, which has over $62 billion in assets under management, is pumping $150 million in growth equity investment into the digital stock photo giant.

Furthermore, the PE firm teamed up with previous Fotolia backer TA Associates, Fotolia management, KKR Capital Markets and a number of banks to provide an additional $150 million in senior (debt) financing for the company.

According to the FT, that gives Fotolia an enterprise value of $450 million.

For your background: competitor Getty Images was acquired by another private equity group, Hellman & Friedman, in a transaction valued at an estimated $2.4 billion back in 2008.

Founded in 2005, Fotolia has become the largest stock imagery site in Europe by a margin, boasting a catalog of over 17 million images and videos that can be licensed by customers worldwide. Thousands of photographers and designers are said to upload thousands of new images and videos onto Fotolia?s platform every day.

Fotolia, which is actually headquartered in New York these days, received its first growth investment from TA Associates in 2009 (worth between $50 million and $100 million according to the FT).

Earlier this year, the company acquired Wilogo, a crowd-sourced design community. Last year, Fotolia co-invested in US-based stock audio site AudioMicro.

INFOGRAPHIC: The Anatomy Of Health Insurance – Business Insider

With more than 40 million Americans currently living without health insurance (up 3 percent from 2000, according to public health advocates MPH Programs), those fortunate enough to be covered still face the daunting task of choosing the best health plan for their needs.?

One thing is certain: It won’t come cheap.

Health insurance will cost the average 22-year-old about $4 million over her lifetime and premiums for families have risen more than $5,000 in the last decade, according to MPH Programs.?

Choosing a plan is half the battle and Americans have proven they’re not exactly up to the challenge.?

One in five consumers have chosen?high-deductible insurance plans, an all-time high trend that The Fiscal Times says has led many to “skimp on preventive services?that could avoid higher health care costs down the road.”

Much like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s cracked down on confusing credit and student loan applications, such reform is desperately needed on the healthcare front.

To help, MPH Programs has put together a graphic that helps clarify some of the foggiest areas:
